In daily life, there are certainly various challenges that need to be faced and at times there are situations that give great pressure that cause an uncomfortable feeling in a person.

These feelings can arise as a result of events experienced by individuals such as problems in the family, career, education, finances, household, friendship, and so on.

It is certain that every human wants a calm feeling, a heart that is always happy without sorrow, a happy life without shedding tears and even a mind that always thinks positively.

When we can't deal with stress in a healthy way, we may feel trapped, empty, lose control of our emotions and even feel hopeless.

It is more dangerous when individuals suffering from emotional stress tend to commit suicide and consider such actions as a way out.

Previously, the media reported that suicide cases in Malaysia increased by 81 percent with 1,142 cases reported in 2021, compared to 631 cases in 2020.

However, sources from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) reported that there was a slight decrease in suicide deaths reported in 2022 which was 981 cases compared to 1,142 cases in 2021.

Even though there is a decrease in cases, we should continue to pay attention and not take this matter lightly in line with the principle of CIVIL Malaysia to ensure human well-being.

Offer support

As a concerned individual and society, it is very important for us to provide support and understanding to individuals who are facing emotional stress, including observing friends around them who may be experiencing emotional stress.

Although some may not fully understand the experience of individuals facing emotional stress, our caring actions at least help them from doing unwanted things.

Showing empathy, listening carefully, and offering appropriate support are among the important steps to help a friend who is experiencing emotional distress.

According to Senior Psychological Officer, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Hospital (HSAAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Rafidah Sadarudin said support plays an important role in speeding up the healing process of unhealthy individuals.

This is so because, when a person feels loved and supported, it can provide motivation and encouragement to them to want to heal quickly.

Thus, emotional support, moral support, and practical support from family, peers, or health professionals can help individuals feel better and provide confidence in their healing process.

Also, encouraging them to seek professional help such as a counselor or mental health specialist is also a good course of action.

The truth is, emotional stress is a natural part of life and cannot be completely avoided. However, we can learn to manage it wisely.

Take the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) Screening Test which can be done online as an initial step to find out the level of emotional stress or depression experienced whether it is at a normal, mild, moderate, severe or very severe level.

However, this test is only for monitoring each individual's mental health because only a psychiatrist can confirm the mental health of an individual after a detailed examination has been carried out.

The healing process itself takes time. Therefore, if there is a close friend or family member who needs our services as a loyal listener, spend time together.

Help us as much as we can. The simple thing that we can give is to ask how they are doing often to show that someone still appreciates and cares about them. -UPM
